A young woman died on Saturday after being thrown during a bungee jump without proper safety equipment in the interior of São Paulo state.

Student Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas (21) had booked an excursion that included a guided hiking tour and a rope jump from the top of an abandoned bridge in a rural area between the cities of Limeira and Cordeirópolis.

A video recording shows the moment when three guides lifted Maria Eduarda. Witnesses told military police that the student was launched without a safety rope and fell from a height of 40 meters. A police helicopter was deployed for the rescue operation, but the young woman died at the scene.

Police arrested the three individuals responsible for Maria Eduarda’s jump. According to the inspector leading the initial investigation, they were caught in the act and charged with homicide with eventual intent.

“This was a team that had no regulations in place, nor did they have authorization to be there. Nevertheless, they organized this event. In my opinion, today’s tragedy occurred because of a failure to verify and properly inspect the installation of the victim’s jump rope,” police inspector Andrea Dantas Levi told Jornal Nacional.

In a statement, the defense attorneys for the three suspects said that the men were experienced in this activity and that this was the first fatal incident in all their years of operating such events.
