PE “Belgrade Fortress” is introducing a regime of night closure for a part of the Upper Town complex of the Belgrade Fortress starting June 3, with the aim of improving visitor safety, preserving cultural and historical heritage, and protecting one of the most significant symbols of Belgrade.

In the period from 00:30 to 04:30, the gates of the Sahat Gate, Kralj Gate, Defterdar Gate, and the Gate of Despot Stefan will be closed.

The decision was made due to frequent incidents recorded in the area of the Upper Town during the night hours in the previous period. In addition to cases of vandalism and disturbance of public order and peace, various types of accidents were also recorded that endangered the safety of visitors, but also led to damage to the space and cultural property belonging to all citizens.

“The Belgrade Fortress is a place of exceptional historical, cultural, and tourist importance, but also a space that belongs to all our fellow citizens and visitors. We are proud that the Belgrade Fortress with Kalemegdan Park is accessible to everyone. That is precisely why we believe that it is our common obligation to guard the Belgrade Fortress and treat it with the care and respect it deserves as a cultural monument of exceptional importance. Unfortunately, frequent acts of vandalism and irresponsible behavior during the night hours leave consequences on the appearance, maintenance, and safety of this space. We are convinced that this measure will contribute to its better protection and a safer stay for all visitors,” stated Nemanja Šegrt, acting director of PE “Belgrade Fortress”.

PE “Belgrade Fortress” invites citizens, visitors, and tourists to protect the Belgrade Fortress and Kalemegdan Park together, respect public space, and honor the decision made solely in the interest of people’s safety and the preservation of cultural heritage. Only with a responsible attitude towards the common good can we ensure that this unique space remains a place of meeting, rest, culture, and pride of Belgrade.

This public space is much more than a fortress and a park – it is a witness to the history of the city and part of the collective memory of generations of Belgraders. By guarding it today, we also guard what we leave to those who come after us.
