Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian stated today that relocating the capital from Tehran has become a necessity due to increasing water shortages and overpopulation, Iranian media reported.

“The reality is that we no longer have any other choice, it is necessary. We can no longer burden this area with an even larger population and new construction. We can develop, but we cannot solve the water problem,” he emphasized, as reported by Tasnim.

He pointed out that transferring every cubic meter of water from the Persian Gulf is extremely costly, questioning whether it is logical to pay such a price.

“What logic is behind this? That is why we must, once and for all, create a new, scientific, and comprehensive plan for the future of our country,” the Iranian official said.

He had previously mentioned the idea of relocating the capital, noting that Tehran has received the lowest amount of rainfall this year in the past century.

Facing shortages, the Iranian government has decided to periodically cut water supply to the 10-million-strong Tehran in order to limit consumption.
