Students from Belgrade universities in blockade set off this morning on a protest march from Belgrade to Novi Sad. This evening, they arrived in Inđija, where they will spend the night before continuing their journey to Novi Sad tomorrow morning.

With the message “One Step to Justice,” the students in blockade from Belgrade began their 70-kilometer-long march towards Novi Sad. On February 1, after completing their walk, they will join Novi Sad students in blocking three bridges in the city, marking three months since the tragedy at the Novi Sad Railway Station, where 15 people lost their lives.

Today, the students walked about 40 kilometers in 10 hours, reaching Inđija, where they will stay overnight.

Throughout the entire route, new groups of citizens continuously joined them, and in many places, they were welcomed with warm receptions, ovations of support, and various refreshments.

Route and Schedule for Tomorrow

The students will leave Inđija at 8:00 AM, with planned stops at:

  • Maradik junction,
  • Church of St. Blessed Mary on Čortanovački Road,
  • Sremski Karlovci, and
  • Varadin Bridge.

They are expected to arrive in Novi Sad at the Railway Station—where the tragedy occurred on November 1, 2024—at around 7:10 PM.

Plan for the Blockade of Three Bridges in Novi Sad

In a statement on Instagram, the students announced that at 6:00 PM, they will move from Varadin and Žeželj Bridges towards Freedom Bridge, where the blockade will last 24 hours.

“For the first three hours, we will block all three bridges. After that, all participants will gather at Freedom Bridge, where the 24-hour blockade will continue. A citizens’ plenary session will decide whether to extend or end the protest. Citizens will also have the right to vote at this plenary,” the students stated.

They emphasized that no disorder will be allowed and that participants must clean up after themselves. A hygiene team will be on-site, but everyone is responsible for their own waste.

Another protest rule states: “Take photos and share, but respect others’ privacy.” The students also stressed the importance of taking care of each other, being tolerant, and acting considerately.

Prohibited Activities

The students outlined a list of banned actions, including:

  • Any form of violence,
  • Vandalizing or damaging city property,
  • Throwing firecrackers or explosive devices,
  • Climbing onto bridges,
  • Littering or discarding cigarette butts outside trash bins,
  • Unsafe approaches to heating devices,
  • Lighting fires independently,
  • Climbing onto tractors, and
  • Blocking the emergency lane for ambulances.

Additionally, they urged protesters to report any rule violations, suspicious individuals, potential provocateurs, or anyone carrying weapons to event organizers. Medical emergencies should also be reported immediately.

What to Bring to the Protest

Students recommended bringing:

  • Whistles,
  • Paints, chalk, sprays,
  • Something to sit on,
  • Water and snacks,
  • Sleeping bags, and
  • Umbrellas, in case of rain.
