The griffon vulture Stoja, who hatched in 2024 in the “Uvac” Special Nature Reserve, has returned to his native colony after two years of wandering throughout the Balkans.
As announced by the Foundation for the Protection of Birds of Prey, this individual left its birthplace shortly after hatching, and thanks to the satellite transmitter he carries on his back, experts monitored his movement in real time.
During his two-year journey, Stoja flew over a large part of the Balkan Peninsula, and his return to Uvac was assessed as extremely significant for this species.
-We hope that Stoja will settle on Uvac again and that he will form his own nest in the coming years – the Foundation stated for the RINA agency.
The return of the griffon vulture further confirms the importance of the Uvac reserve as one of the key habitats for griffon vultures in the region, but also the success of the monitoring and protection program for this endangered species.
Experts point out that the monitoring of Stoja’s movement will be continued in the coming period in order to collect additional data on migration routes and the behavior of these birds in nature.
