The European Democrats commented on the incidents in Užice, saying that police officers remained passive in the face of unprecedented violence and that the clashes are the worst possible start to an election campaign.

“Today in Užice, Serbia, police officers were removing demonstrators from Partizanska Square ahead of an SNS rally attended by Aleksandar Vučić, using tear gas, while remaining passive in the face of unprecedented violence,” the European Democrats wrote on X.

They recalled that Serbia is heading toward early parliamentary elections in October.

“Violence and clashes are the worst possible start to an election campaign. Vučić is showing himself to be someone who is unable – or unwilling – to guarantee a fair, orderly and democratic electoral contest,” they stressed, concluding that Serbia deserves a free and dignified democratic process, not this.

Let us recall that an SNS rally was held in Užice today, where President Vučić also delivered a speech.

During the day, police pushed back dissatisfied citizens who organized a counter-rally.

Several physical clashes occurred between citizens and police, as well as between citizens and SNS supporters.

It was reported that one man was attacked by an SNS steward.
