The authorities are cracking down on schools, while pro-government media are targeting students in the worst possible way. A recent high school graduate from Valjevo, simply because he spoke at several protests, experienced having his grades read aloud on the local Informer, along with the publication of his photos and discussions about his private life, all in violation of the law. No one has reacted.

“Vuk Vasiljević, Serbian language – a failing grade as big as a house in the first semester of the fourth year of high school, bravo,” said Andrea Veskov, host on Informer TV.

Bravo as well to the investigative journalism of the local version of Informer, which has apparently reached its peak on Valjevo’s V5 television. Host Andrea Veskov obtained the grade report of Vuk Vasiljević, now a former student of the Valjevo High School, and read his grades live on air, N1 reports.

“And now, Physical Education – 5! Bravo, we have to praise this honor student who only has a top grade in PE, but Music – a 3, you’re not particularly talented, and Art – a 2. What a little genius,” Veskov continued.

As the former president of the Student Parliament at Valjevo High School, the 19-year-old became known to the public during student and civic protests in Valjevo. He has no doubt that this is the reason he became a target of pro-government media.

“I don’t know where those grades came from, how they reached the presenter, or how she obtained them. Whether someone from the school or the ministry sent them. Of course, I will use every legal avenue regarding this case, as well as the other accusations. My grades, like the grades of every student in any school, are protected by law and cannot be handed over to people who have no authorization to access them in that way,” said Vuk Vasiljević, a former student of Valjevo High School.

How Did the Grades Leave the School?

They are not supposed to—but apparently they can. How did the grades leave the school, if that is where they came from? We asked Valjevo High School who has access to student grades and whether it would conduct an internal investigation into how Informer obtained a student’s grade report. There has been no response.

A mathematics teacher at Valjevo High School confirmed that such information is strictly protected.

“I don’t know if you are aware, but because of the new Personal Data Protection Law, we are not even allowed to read students’ grades aloud at parent-teacher meetings. Also, as a subject teacher, in the eDiary system I can only see the grades from my own subject, which means I do not know what grades my students have in other subjects. So it is absolutely unacceptable for one student’s grades to be publicly disclosed in this way,” said Svetlana Dašković Milovanović, a mathematics teacher at Valjevo High School.

Although Vuk says that hearing his first-semester grades read out publicly on television affected him the most, he says it was not the most disgraceful thing said about him on the same media outlet.

“It’s difficult for me even to say this out loud now—that I am supposedly in a romantic relationship with the Rector of the University of Belgrade. They were referring to a photo taken on June 28 in Kraljevo during the protest. I posted that picture on my social media, and then they started using it for those purposes,” said Vasiljević.

“Did you notice how he grabbed him around the waist?” commented Saša Milovanović, director of Srpski Telegraf, on Informer TV.

“Yes, yes, around the waist, I see…,” replied Vesna Veizović, editor of the Vaseljenska portal.

“Well, love is in the air, and we have nothing against that. We are always in favor of love. Love each other, it’s all fine,” added Informer TV host Andrea Veskov.

“He held him tight enough for a perfect ten, as they say…,” Milovanović continued.

Silence From Both the School and the City

“There are no longer any boundaries to what can be said publicly today without any accountability,” observed the Valjevo High School teacher, expressing surprise that both the school and the city have remained silent.

“For no one to react to how this affects a young person at this stage of his life, after graduating from high school, enrolling in university, and preparing to continue his education… Even adults struggle with this kind of public targeting in the media, fueled by falsehoods and lies. I don’t know how our student is coping with it,” said Dašković Milovanović.

He says he is coping by seeking and waiting for the institutions to start doing their job, because that is precisely why high school students in Valjevo joined the protests.
