The former Chief of the General Staff of the Army of Yugoslavia, Momčilo Perišić, has been released after serving more than two-thirds of the four-year prison sentence to which he was legally sentenced for espionage, his lawyer Novak Lukić stated today for the Nova.rs portal.
“It is true that he was released on parole. He served more than three-quarters of the imposed sentence, and the decision on parole was made on June 25,” Lukić told Nova.rs.
In 2022, the Court of Appeal in Belgrade legally sentenced Momčilo Perišić to four years in prison for revealing state secrets, namely handing over confidential military documents to the United States of America Embassy official John Neighbor in 2002.
In the first instance, he was sentenced to three years in prison, only for the Court of Appeal to increase the sentence to four years.
Perišić was previously also accused before the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, where he was sentenced in the first instance to 27 years in prison for war crimes, but the Appeals Chamber in 2013 legally acquitted him of all charges and ordered his release.
