Ninety-five-year-old Stojan Mitrović from the Niš neighborhood of Ratko Jović found a wallet with money, keys, and documents, but he did not just hand it over to the police counter; instead, he waited to personally meet the owner and count the money in front of him. His gesture “forced” the family of the student from Prokuplje to travel to Niš on the same day to thank him in person.
Early in the morning, at the bus stop in the Ratko Jović neighborhood, Faculty of Law student Luka Dragićević lost his wallet with personal documents, money, and apartment keys. Mitrović, a resident of this neighborhood, happened to be at the same place, found the wallet, and took it to the police station in the afternoon.
Since he did not want to just leave the wallet and go, he requested an official confirmation of delivery and decided to stay until the owner appeared, so that he could ensure in front of him that nothing was missing.
The officers at the station told the family that this level of personal verification almost never happens in practice, which additionally prompted the parents, as soon as they heard that a 95-year-old was waiting for their son, to head to Niš from Prokuplje.
We, as parents, came to meet the grandpa, had dinner, and drove him home, because it was already late, so that his family wouldn’t worry. Grandpa Stojan told us that when he saw the student cafeteria card in the wallet, he couldn’t just hand it over to the police and leave without making sure that the student would get the wallet. Something like this gives us hope that true values, honor, and honesty still exist – say Luka’s parents.
The encounter that arose around a lost wallet thus turned into proof that honesty, in a time when it is mostly just talked about, can connect two families who until that morning did not even know each other.
