A strong storm over central Serbia two days ago forced the Air Serbia crew to find a way around the clouds on a flight from Niš to Belgrade. Co-pilot Dina Milovanović told RTS that the goal was to avoid the storm, but it was so widespread that the flight had to be carried out through three countries. Captain Nenad Breberin stated that any decisions about flight changes are made by the person in his position.
The plane that took off from Niš on Sunday had to fly through the airspace of Romania and Bulgaria before landing in Belgrade, due to a strong storm.
Captain Nenad Breberin explained that the aircraft crew always has information about announced storms.
“We know approximately how storms move. When it comes to avoiding bad weather, our colleagues do it routinely. Sometimes it happens that we even go over three countries. It depends on how big the storm is and how much we have to go around it,” Breberin said, as reported by RTS.
Co-pilot Dina Milovanović reminded that large rain-filled clouds had developed that day.
“We never fly through such clouds and we try in every way to avoid them. Colleagues tried to get as far away from them as possible, and they ended up in two other countries to safely return to Belgrade afterwards,” Milovanović emphasized.
Breberin states that decisions about any changes to the flight are made by the captain.
“The captain is the most responsible for everything that happens in and around the aircraft. Decisions are made using information received from meteorology and air traffic control services, taking into account the suggestions of his colleague, the junior first officer,” the captain himself explained.
Milovanović emphasized that the passengers had no fear regarding the changed route, nor were they in danger.
“We have established procedures for bypassing such weather hazards, so passengers were not in danger at any point, not even close. They usually only notice mild turbulence, but sometimes it’s unavoidable. It often happens that our airline informs passengers about possible hazards that may affect the schedule, thus further preparing them,” the co-pilot stated.
