“Good news travels fast,” as the old saying goes. In the case of Serbia, that voice has mutated many times.
Over the past few decades, Serbia’s image has gradually changed, moving from negative associations to a more open approach to culture, tradition, and hospitality. The wars of the 90s, sanctions against our country, and the bombing by NATO, although contrary to the position of the United Nations, all created a negative image of our country and of us as a bloodthirsty and criminal people.

Despite these challenges, positive opinions about Serbia still exist, especially when it comes to its rich history, delicious food, and famous athletes who come from it. It is precisely the latter that has most influenced the improvement of our image in the world. Novak Djokovic as the greatest tennis player ever, Nikola Jokic as the currently best basketball player in the world, Nemanja Vidic as the former best defender in the world, are our most famous representatives around the planet. Along with them is our most famous scientist, to whom recognition has been returned in recent years that he did not receive during his lifetime – Nikola Tesla. At least if we are to judge by a poll on the X platform conducted by a profile with millions of followers that deals with such statistics.

“What do you think of first when you hear Serbia?”
This was the question posted on that profile. The comments are mostly positive, and the first one was dedicated to our ace who has dominated white sports for over a decade.
“Born in Belgrade, Serbia, he is considered one of the greatest tennis players of all time.
He holds the record for the most singles titles in Grand Slam tournaments with 24, including 10 Australian Opens.
“He also won the gold medal in singles at the 2024 Paris Olympics, becoming the oldest gold medalist”, reads the entire tweet with a picture of Novak.

Apart from the jokes with Tesla and our aforementioned athletes, there were comments praising our history, culture, food, as well as our women.

However, the fact that people are familiar with the current state of our country is also evidenced by comments that talk about the situation regarding Kosovo, being surrounded by NATO countries, and how we are eternal candidates for the European Union.

One of the most picturesque comments reads:
“All the best (people, sports, art, science…), but only one worst thing is damn politics.”

All in all, although there is often a belief in our people that everyone is against us, these comments certainly prove that a positive opinion of our country does, in fact, exist.
