A student named Matea from Prokuplje organized a sale of Easter decorations to help a friend go on an excursion, demonstrating true humanity.
In a time when there is frequent talk about a lack of empathy and solidarity, a story from Prokuplje shows that the most beautiful lessons on humanity are sometimes found in children’s hands.
This was recently demonstrated by Matea Radonjic, a fifth-grade student at the “9. Oktobar” Elementary School, when he decided to do something many adults would not—to find a way himself to help a classmate and enable her to go on an excursion together with everyone else.
Namely, with the help of his family, Matea organized a sale of Easter decorations, and the fundraising was successfully completed in just a few hours.
The little people with big hearts in the 5-4 class had been making plans all along, some publicly and some secretly, to provide funds for their friend at the traditional Easter humanitarian school fair so that she could join them on the excursion.
The only thing spoiling their plan was the fact that this event was scheduled to take place a few days after the trip.
“Grandpa, I need you to help me with something”
To preempt all of this, Matea Radonjic came home from school one day with the idea of using his grandfather’s carpentry skills to secure the necessary funds before the excursion.
“Grandpa, I need you to help me with something. ‘What is it, Mato?’ he says, ‘our friend isn’t going on the excursion, her parents aren’t able to pay for it,’ ‘come on, you make something, and I’ll go out on the street and sell it,'” recounts Slobodan Bakic, Matea’s grandfather.
“Egg stands, bunnies, baskets, and various things like that. Mom, Dad, Grandma, and I painted and decorated the items that Grandpa made,” says Matea Radonjic.
The Easter decorations made in the Bakic-Radonjic family had to be sold as soon as possible, as the departure day for the excursion was approaching. A busy location in the city was chosen, and next to Matea and the items stood a sign explaining the purpose of the entire action.
“It took about 15 to twenty minutes until people started returning from work, and then the sales began; in two or two and a half hours, I sold almost everything,” says Matea Radonjic.
“He has always had ideas like that, he participated and realized them; of course, we as a family were always there to support him, but this is something that left a truly great impression on us, and the delight was enormous,” states Lela Bakic-Radonjic, Matea’s mother.
The entire amount from the street sale of Easter decorations was handed over by this little humanitarian to his homeroom teacher, who, amidst the surprise, did not hide her immense satisfaction at being surrounded by children who perceive the world around them in the right way and are ready to help someone in need at any moment.

“The whole class is always in the mood to organize something like that, and Mata especially. He took the initiative himself and did it. He made us happy; he collected enough to pay for the excursion; however, from that money, he asked me for us to prepare her for the excursion and give her money to take along, and that tomorrow we would additionally collect money and pay for the excursion,” states Dragana Djordjevic, the homeroom teacher.
In the meantime, all the students of the 5-4 class at the “9. Oktobar” Elementary School in Prokuplje went on a one-day excursion to Vrnjacka Banja, happy that they were all together that day as well.
Matea Radonjic continues on, waiting for a new opportunity to help someone because, as he says, it fulfills him and makes him happy.
