The Ministry of Internal Affairs (MUP) of Serbia issued a statement regarding the incident that occurred last night in Kula. Let us recall, students announced this morning that they were attacked by activists of the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS), while the MUP in its statement claims that the students attacked the activists.

As the students previously announced, they were attacked in Kula by masked individuals wearing balaclavas, who were guarded by the police.

However, the MUP statement says that one person has been arrested, while two others have been identified for allegedly attacking activists of the Serbian Progressive Party.

“Police officers in Sombor brought D. S. (30) from Kula to official premises and identified two more persons, on suspicion that they were part of a group of several individuals who last night, around 2:45 a.m. in Kula, insulted and threatened three activists of the Serbian Progressive Party,” the statement said.

According to the report based on which the police responded, about twenty individuals, holding metal bars and wooden sticks, directed insults and then threats to life at the injured parties, who were securing political propaganda material in Igmanska Street due to previous cases of destruction, the statement says.

“Previously, according to the report, they blocked the path of the vehicle in which the injured parties were, using their own vehicles. The police immediately notified the Basic Public Prosecutor’s Office in Vrbas, which classified the event as the criminal offense of endangering safety and ordered the police to undertake measures and actions within its jurisdiction, as well as to determine whether firearms were used. Police officers of the Police Administration in Sombor, in cooperation with the competent prosecutor’s office, continue further work on identifying persons and establishing all facts and circumstances of this event,” they stated.

What happened?

Let us recall, students in Kula announced this morning that they were attacked by individuals with balaclavas on their heads, armed with sticks, and that at one moment gunshots were heard. After this incident, videos of the attackers also appeared on social networks.

The footage shows two men in a car, allegedly guards of SNS billboards in Kula, whom students claim had previously attacked them. They were secured by the police, who allowed them to leave the scene.

The students stated that the attack on them occurred last night, three hours after midnight.

“Last night around three in the morning, three of our activists were driving around Kula. As you know, members of the Serbian Progressive Party guard billboards and banners of that party throughout Kula and we have nothing against that. However, certain cars began to follow them and forced them into the outskirts, where they were then attacked. They managed to call our second team, which was in the office preparing for the election process on Sunday,” said this morning on TV Nova activist of “Mladi Kula,” Katarina Petrović.

As she further explained, when the second group of activists arrived, people armed and wearing balaclavas exited the vehicles.

“At that moment a gunshot was also heard. We did not know at that moment who they were shooting at, but after a few minutes we made sure that our activists were safe and not injured. However, they came out with sticks. We contacted the police, and they had previously introduced themselves as police officers. When the police arrived, they did not want to identify them, that is, they said they could only check their IDs, but that they could not detain them despite the fact that shots had been fired at our people.”
