Serbian national badminton team membersAnđela Vitman and Mihajlo Tomić won the gold medal in mixed doubles at the “Victor FZ Forza Hungarian International Championships” tournament, while Tomić also claimed gold alongside Viktor Petrović in the men’s doubles competition.
According to a statement from the Badminton Association of Serbia, the Serbian representatives competing in Budapest were Mihajlo Tomić, Viktor Petrović, Andrija Doder, Sergej Lukić, Anđela Vitman, Marija Sudimac and Sara Lončar, accompanied by national team coach Milan Barbir.
“It was a fantastic weekend for Anđela, Viktor and me. I am proud that we managed to achieve such a great success. I am particularly pleased with the progress in our game, which became increasingly evident as the tournament went on. Full of confidence, we are continuing the competitive season with the same goals,” Tomić said.
Barbir said he was extremely satisfied with the Serbian national team’s performance at the tournament in Budapest.
“We played in two finals and won two gold medals, and we were only a few points away from a third medal. That result speaks for itself. What makes me particularly happy is the psychological maturity our players demonstrated. They remained composed and level-headed at crucial and decisive moments, while showing tremendous fighting spirit from the first match to the last. That is precisely the quality we had been lacking somewhat in the past. That is why I am extremely, extremely pleased with this progress. It shows that we are on the right track. I congratulate all the national team members on this historic achievement. I believe we will maintain this level of form and confidence at our upcoming competitions,” Barbir said.
Vitman and Tomić arrived in Budapest as the top seeds. In the semifinals, they defeated the Danish-Austrian mixed doubles pair Pedersen/Au Jong (21:11, 21:14).
The Serbian representatives defeated the Swedish pair Svenson/Stromval in the final (17:21, 21:19, 21:14).
Tomić and Petrović competed as the eighth seeds.
Serbian representatives Marija Sudimac and Sara Lončar were eliminated in the women’s doubles quarterfinals.
Andrija Doder and Sergej Lukić, seeded sixth, lost in the first round.
In the singles competitions, Marija Sudimac, Sara Lončar and Viktor Petrović finished their campaigns in the qualifying rounds, while the mixed doubles pair Viktor Petrović/Sara Lončar were eliminated in the round of 32.
“Participation of the national team members in the ’51st Victor FZ Forza Hungarian International Championships’ was supported by the Ministry of Sport of the Republic of Serbia, which provided the necessary financial resources,” the Badminton Association of Serbia stated.
