For a family from Serbia, a dream vacation turned into a fight for survival in just a matter of moments. After a woman from Aranđelovac suddenly fell ill on a beach in Greece, the humanity and quick thinking of people who happened to be in the right place at the right time helped save her life.

A 62-year-old tourist from Aranđelovac became seriously ill while on the beach. Everything unfolded at lightning speed, with a call for help coming from a nearby beach bar.

“A young man working there immediately alerted a doctor,” said Jovica Gogić, a Serbian tour guide.

Serbian Woman Suffers Stroke, Then Cardiac Arrest

According to Gogić, every minute was crucial in determining the woman’s fate, and the battle to save her life lasted for an entire hour.

“The situation was extremely serious. The patient suffered cardiac arrest as a result of a stroke she experienced on the beach. We reacted quickly, resuscitated her, and administered appropriate therapy. The young man who rushed to help was also of great assistance,” said Dr. Nikos Geostatis, a physician in Leptokaria.

The doctor added that the patient was transported conscious to a hospital in Thessaloniki, where her treatment will continue.

“When conditions allow, she will be transferred to Serbia. For now, I know that her condition remains serious,” said Dr. Nikos, who has been providing medical assistance to Serbian tourists on the beaches of Greece’s Olympic Region for more than ten years.

Hardly a Week Passes Without Drama on the Beaches, Often Involving Serbian Tourists

Such situations are not uncommon on Greek beaches, the Serbian tour guide noted.

“Hardly a week goes by without a serious incident on beaches frequented by Serbian tourists. In this particular case, the tourist’s life was in danger, but no season passes without at least several similar serious situations. Dr. Nikos’ assistance is invaluable, especially when tourists arrive with pre-existing medical conditions,” guide Jovica explained.

This incident once again demonstrated how important a rapid response, professional medical assistance, and travel health insurance—which most Serbian tourists obtain before traveling abroad—can be in unexpected emergencies.
