Eight Serbian citizens, who were scheduled to return home from Madagascar on Friday, are still unable to do so due to violent protests in the island nation. They are currently located at the airport but are still unable to fly back.

“The situation has calmed down a bit right now, and here we are at the airport, sticking together. We have been trying to get information since this morning on how to travel, but without success. For now, we are left to fend for ourselves and have to manage on our own. Regarding the other passengers, we have two heart patients who have medication until Wednesday and are afraid of running out,” one of the Serbian citizens told N1 today. He also provided N1 with a video from the airport on Friday and a photo of the current situation.

Serbian Citizens Still Stranded in Madagascar: Left to Fend for Themselves, Including Heart Patients

The eight Serbian citizens were stranded in Madagascar after being there on vacation.

They were supposed to travel back to Serbia on Friday, but had to urgently leave the airport due to the emergency situation.

Protests are happening all over Madagascar, and a local agency told them not to expose themselves, as tourists are reportedly at risk.

While the French Le Monde reported that at least five people were killed in the protests, N1’s sources on Friday said that people in the city were talking about a higher number of casualties.

“As for the embassy, the closest one is in Nairobi, and for now, we are only communicating with the agency through which we are traveling, hoping they will be able to arrange a flight for us. Power and water restrictions are a daily occurrence here, which is why the protests started,” the citizen told N1.

According to world agencies, authorities in Madagascar have imposed a curfew from dusk till dawn in the capital, Antananarivo, after protests over frequent power and water outages escalated into violence, a high-ranking security official announced.

The protests were organized by the group “Gen Z Madagascar,” which was launched on social media in mid-September by young Malagasy, some of whom are currently abroad, Le Monde reports.
