Aleksandar Vučić is once again sending letters to pensioners and once again abusing personal data. In the letter he signs, Vučić flatters the oldest members of society, the largest voting bloc, reminding them that they will receive state aid, but also that the elections are approaching and that they should choose whom to vote for. The Center for Research, Transparency and Accountability (CRTA) explains that this is a total abuse of public resources for the purpose of political promotion.

Pensioners make up a third of the electorate in Serbia, they will soon receive one-time state aid, as well as a letter personally signed by Aleksandar Vučić.

This time, the president tells them in the letter that he “was worried about the high price of medicines” and that he is now “happy that the costs of purchasing these most important medicines are significantly lower.”

“We have done a lot, given tourist vouchers to the most vulnerable. But I know that we still have not provided a sufficient number of centers for the elderly and our veterans, that we still have not resolved all the issues related to early retirement, as well as many other matters,” the president writes in his letter to pensioners, adding:

“Nevertheless, the fight for your better life was and will remain my priority,” Vučić says.

He then reminds pensioners that their pensions are paid regularly.

“We have not only managed to preserve pensions and pay them regularly, but we have also enabled them to grow faster than prices and inflation. We achieved all of this, thanks to you, while preserving the country’s financial stability. I did not do this and we did not do this to flatter you. We all did this together, deeply aware of the fact that you built our Serbia, that you protected, safeguarded and defended it under the most difficult conditions, and that with your hardworking hands you deserved and earned much more than what we were able to do.”

The president then told pensioners:

“There are malicious people who are trying to portray our concern for you as vote-buying. They have such a low opinion of you, and of our people, that they expect you to forget that the fight for your well-being has been my priority for more than twelve years,” the president states, among other things, in the letter.

He also adds that “those who equate concern for pensioners with vote-buying obviously believe that you are greedy.”

Then there is also a suggestion regarding voting in the upcoming elections.

“I want to tell you that every person, every pensioner, each and every one of you has and will have the same rights as every other citizen to decide whom to give your vote to. In our surroundings, there are those who oppose our efforts to provide you with support because they see you as a burden. In the end, the only burden is those who plundered this country to fill their own pockets.”

Vučić concludes by telling pensioners that they are a source of pride and inspiration.

“Builders and guardians of our present, a treasury of wisdom, witnesses to and participants in the joys and sorrows of our nation, its struggles and victories.”

CRTA emphasizes that the content of the letter from the President of Serbia to pensioners and recipients of social benefits in Serbia is an unequivocal example of political (pre-election) campaigning.

According to information obtained by CRTA, postal workers are required to collect from letter recipients, along with their first and last names, their phone numbers and signatures of consent to receive further notifications.

“Perhaps new political messages? As we learn from employees of the Post of Serbia, the Health Insurance Fund of Serbia (RFZO) is the client ordering the service. Does this also mean that it is covering the costs of this mass campaign? Or are the costs being covered by the Post of Serbia itself? The party’s fight for the souls of pensioners and socially vulnerable citizens is being paid for with state or public money – indirectly, with the money of those very citizens,” CRTA published.

Jelena Milošević of the Party of Freedom and Justice also announced that, for the first time, Vučić’s letter to pensioners will be sent as a parcel or tracked letter for which records will be kept.

“To see who will refuse. Post Office employees say that postal workers are not pollsters and that this has never been done before. A notice has also arrived stating that delivering the letters is a priority and that anyone who does not finish by Friday will have to work overtime on Saturday as well,” Milošević wrote.
