Duane “Keffe D” Davis (63) was found guilty of murdering legendary rapper Tupac Shakur, bringing a judicial conclusion to a case that had been shrouded in mystery for decades.
A jury in Nevada reached the decision on Monday, after about two weeks of trial. Members of Tupac’s family, who attended the reading of the verdict, hugged one another and wiped away tears, reports the “New York Times.”
Davis was once a high-ranking member of the Los Angeles-based “Crips” organization. He is the first person to be convicted in connection with the murder of Tupac Shakur, one of the pioneers of the hip-hop scene.
Tupac was killed on September 7, 1996, in Las Vegas. The rapper was in a car when another vehicle approached and a burst of gunfire was opened from it.
Shakur was struck by bullets and died several days later. He was only 25 years old.
Davis was not accused of personally shooting Tupac. Prosecutors, however, argued that he obtained the weapon for the shooter and organized the entire attack.
Davis’s nephew, Orlando Anderson, was mentioned for years as the person who allegedly shot the rapper. He was killed in a gang shootout two years after Tupac’s death.
“HE CONFESSED HIMSELF”
Prosecutors based a large part of their case precisely on Davis’s previous statements.
He allegedly spoke about his role in the events in 2008 while attempting to avoid possible charges, and later described details of the entire story in his memoir published in 2019.
According to prosecutors, those statements helped investigators reopen the case and led to Davis’s arrest in 2023.
The defense, however, argued that his statements were fabricated.
Attorney Michael Sanft attempted to challenge Davis’s claims, calling his memoir historical fiction. During his closing argument, he even compared it to the film “Titanic.”
“Has anyone watched the documentary ‘Titanic,’ with Jack and Rose?” Sanft asked sarcastically.
Prosecutors, on the other hand, argued that Davis’s statements represented only part of the evidence and that the entire case was “filled with circumstantial evidence” linking him to the murder.
THE CONFLICT THAT PRECEDED THE MURDER
According to the prosecution’s arguments, several hours before Tupac’s murder, a confrontation took place in which Davis’s nephew, Orlando Anderson, was attacked.
According to prosecutors, Tupac was associated with the rival “Bloods” gang, and Anderson was physically assaulted.
Prosecutors argued that the incident provided the immediate motive for the subsequent retaliation.
“That was the nature of gang life in the ’90s in Compton – you had no choice, you couldn’t go back to Compton after being publicly beaten,” Chief Deputy District Attorney Binu Palal said during his closing argument.
According to him, Davis organized the response to the attack.
Palal claimed that Davis “took a gun and went hunting for Tupac Shakur.”
The jury ultimately accepted the prosecution’s arguments and found Davis guilty of murder.

HE FACES LIFE IN PRISON
The verdict could result in a sentence of life in prison.
Judge Carli Kierny ruled that Davis would remain in custody without the possibility of bail until sentencing. Sentencing is scheduled for October 13.
Immediately before he was taken from the courtroom, Davis asked the judge whether he could get his belongings back, including his phones and jewelry.
He also said that he planned to appeal the verdict.
Thus, almost 30 years after Tupac Shakur was killed on the streets of Las Vegas, one of the most famous unsolved cases in hip-hop history has reached its first judicial conclusion.
