US President Donald Trump stated that he will order the intervention of federal police to suppress crime in Chicago and Baltimore, despite the strong opposition of state and local officials in those cities.
“Chicago is very interesting, because I watched them say ‘We don’t need help, we’re safe’, but two weeks ago, six people were killed, and 24 people were hit by bullets,” Trump said without specifying the exact date for sending federal forces, reports the American portal Politico.
The president praised Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser, for her cooperation with federal forces, while he criticized the Democratic governor of Illinois, Jay B. Pritzker, who stated that crime in Chicago does not require federal intervention.

“If the governor of Illinois would call me, I would love to do it. Now we will do it no matter what. We have the right to it because I have an obligation to protect this country,” Trump said.
Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson said that the violence in the city comes from too many weapons on the streets that were smuggled into Illinois from neighboring states, including Indiana, which is run by Republicans.
“Chicago will continue to have a problem with violence as long as red states continue to have a problem with guns,” Johnson said, AP reports.

Trump also said that he has an obligation to protect America, including Baltimore.
Local authorities in Baltimore joined the Democratic governor of Maryland, Wes Moore, in opposing federal police interventions.
Trump has already sent the National Guard to the city of Washington, and he recently announced that he plans similar steps in other cities, such as New York and Chicago, which are run by Democrats.
