A Chinese company is preparing to open a new copper and gold mine near Zaječar, while experts warn that the project could threaten the drinking water supply and the thermal springs of Gamzigradska Banja. Although the development plan includes the possibility of relocating local residents, they insist they have no intention of leaving.
Chinese company Serbia Zijin Mining is preparing to begin copper and gold ore extraction near Zaječar as part of a new mining project called Malka Golaja. However, the announcement of the project has sparked serious concern among local residents and experts.
According to specialists, the planned excavation at a depth of as much as 2,200 meters poses a direct threat to the thermal and drinking water sources of nearby Gamzigradska Banja.
Work has already begun, but no permit yet?
Although the Ministry of Mining and Energy has officially issued permits only for the construction of access roads, the situation on the ground appears to tell a different story. According to environmental organizations and local residents, after illegal forest clearing, heavy machinery has already entered the site and drilling has begun.
Forestry engineer Dejan Vučković from the Center for Biosphere Protection says the process is being rushed so that citizens do not have enough time to respond.
“Our mayor claims that no mining will take place, yet they are already drilling. The company is carrying out extensive construction work and preparing drilling sites far beyond the areas officially listed on the information boards,” Vučković warned.
Relocation of residents also planned
The Spatial Plan for the Special Purpose Area provides for the company to establish special zones where, if assessments determine that conditions for safe living no longer exist, residents could be relocated.
However, the people of Zaječar and the surrounding villages are adamant that leaving their homes is not an option. They say they do not want to suffer the same fate as settlements near Bor and will fight to preserve their homes, property, and environment.
The early public consultation on the draft Spatial Plan will remain open until August 3, during which citizens and other interested parties may submit their comments and objections.
