Eight people, including four children, were wounded in a shooting on Coney Island in the New York City borough of Brooklyn during Independence Day celebrations.
The shooting occurred in the evening as crowds gathered to watch the fireworks and celebrate the U.S. national holiday.
Police responded to reports of multiple people shot at around 10:37 p.m. Upon arriving at the scene, officers found eight victims suffering from gunshot wounds, ranging in age from 6 to 37 years old. All were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment. Among the injured were a six-year-old boy shot in the stomach, a seven-year-old boy wounded in both legs, a 12-year-old boy shot in the leg, and a 14-year-old boy who suffered a gunshot wound to the thigh.

Police said seven of the victims are in stable condition, while a 21-year-old woman remains in critical condition after being shot in the chest. A firearm was recovered at the scene, but no arrests have been made so far. Investigators are working to determine how many attackers were involved and what the motive for the shooting was.
The incident took place near a residential housing complex and a section of the boardwalk where the fireworks display was being held, an area where police had already been deployed before the shooting. Surveillance footage and witness statements indicate that officers were seen running while carrying wounded children in their arms to get them to waiting ambulances as quickly as possible. The shooting has once again prompted local residents and city officials to raise concerns about gun violence, particularly during large public gatherings held on holidays.
