Novak Đoković did not hold a traditional press conference after his first-round exit from the US Open, but instead spoke to reporters outside the arena and shared his thoughts following his defeat*** to Mariano Navone.***

“Well, the feeling on the court for me… That is something I’ve unfortunately been dealing with pretty much in every match this year. You know, nausea, vomiting, serious problems there… And then my whole body, you know, basically starts to fall apart – cramps, pain and… There you go. My back simply gave out in the end, as did my shoulder and knee. I couldn’t… I couldn’t finish the match. I was behind in the fourth set. I was simply struggling the entire time, from the fourth game of the match. I don’t want to take anything away from his victory. Congratulations to him, he’s a great guy, a fighter, but I didn’t enjoy myself.”

Is this a problem that you can solve?

I don’t know. I’m trying, man, I’m trying. We’ll see.

What lessons do you take from the last few months?

I don’t know, I wouldn’t go that deep right now. I’m just trying to see what is really happening and how far I can go like this.

For the first time in 20 years, you lost in… the first round. That’s a pretty crazy streak?

Yeah, that’s a good record, another one, but… Yeah, I’m not really thinking about that. You know, obviously I’m very proud of all the achievements from the past. Now is now, I’ve just come off the court and I’m still trying to get my body back in order.

And the crowd? What did it mean that they were trying to push you through all of this?

Yeah, they were super nice. I mean… I’m so grateful that I experienced that. When it comes to the match itself and the general feeling of how I felt in my body and how I played… It really wasn’t pleasant. I pretty much despised every moment I spent on the court today. From the perspective of the crowd and the support, it was incredible, honestly. From the very beginning, they were trying to lift me up during the important moments. I’m very sorry that I didn’t put on the performance that I should have, or could have, or wanted to… For them. The love and respect they showed me at the end really touched my heart.

Just tell us how you got through all of that?

Well, I don’t know, I didn’t get through it as far as the defeat is concerned, unfortunately I didn’t get through that. Okay, it is what it is. When you put everything into a bigger perspective, there is a lot, a lot to be grateful for. That’s it. That’s what I’m trying to tell myself now and what I need to focus on. If I start talking about everything else, it won’t end well – Đoković concluded.
