A two-story building collapsed in an explosion that rocked the Plaka neighborhood of Athens this morning, at the foot of the Acropolis, and at least two people were injured, Greek authorities said.
The Fire Service said the explosion occurred in an old two-story building in Plaka, the historic part of Athens located at the foot of the Acropolis hill, home to Greece’s most visited ancient monument. The building collapsed, while surrounding buildings were also damaged.
Firefighters rescued two women from a neighboring building, while police said both were taken to hospital. Local media reported that a passerby also suffered minor injuries in the explosion.

Police cordoned off the area, while firefighters checked whether anyone else might have been trapped beneath the rubble.
The cause of the explosion is not yet known, but local media report that a gas leak is suspected.
