President of Serbia Aleksandar Vučić has canceled the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) rally in Novi Sad, which was scheduled for September 4.

“I wanted and planned to address the people of Novi Sad on Friday, September 4. I hereby inform you that we will postpone that address and that rally because, for me, people’s lives are the most important thing. The police would not protect us from them, the police would protect them from angry citizens who can no longer tolerate the terror in the streets. But, for me, both sides are citizens,” Vučić said on Instagram.

Before that, Vučić had already announced a major rally in Novi Sad seven times over the past year and a half, the Istinomer portal counted.

Although details about the announced SNS rally had not even been published, Novi Sad assemblies and people from across Serbia announced that they would come to Novi Sad to send a message that the president was not welcome in the city.

Meanwhile, Vučić’s political opponents have repeatedly pointed out that Vučić has not dared to visit Novi Sad since the canopy at the reconstructed Railway Station collapsed on November 1, 2024, killing 16 people.

The Serbian Progressive Party held its last rally in Užice on August 29, when police pushed citizens farther away from the rally, while cameras also recorded SNS security personnel beating individual citizens.

Several attacks on journalists also took place in Užice — an RTS cameraman was hit by a stone, a TV Pink crane operator was attacked, police confiscated the phone of Marko Miletić from Mašina while he was filming the police pushing back citizens, while an SNS MP targeted TV Nova correspondents as the “conductors” of violence.
