Two helicopters collided in midair over Rio de Janeiro on Sunday morning, leaving six people dead, Brazilian authorities said.

American singer-songwriter, rapper, music producer, comedian, and filmmaker Oliver Tree was among those killed in the air crash in Brazil when the helicopter he was traveling in collided with another helicopter. The crash occurred on Sunday, June 14, and claimed six lives, according to the BBC.

Who Was Oliver Tree?

Tree, born Oliver Tree Nickell in Santa Cruz, California, first rose to fame in 2016 after his song “When I’m Down” went viral on social media, the BBC recalled.

He gained international recognition with hits including:

  • “Alien Boy”

His fourth studio album, “Love You Madly Hate You Badly”, was released in April this year.

Oliver Tree also made headlines in 2020 when he set a Guinness World Record for building the world’s largest scooter, measuring 4.16 meters high and 3.13 meters long.

The Crash Over Rio

The 32-year-old artist was on a world tour when the tragedy occurred over Rio de Janeiro.

One of the helicopters crashed into the parking lot of a car dealership in western Rio, where the impact sparked a fire that spread to several electric vehicles. Firefighters extinguished the blaze, while numerous emergency services were dispatched to the scene.

According to the Rio de Janeiro Fire Department, all six people aboard the two aircraft died.
