The Serbian Polar Scientific Research Center, a young scientific organization from Serbia, presented a vision at the fourth international scientific and business conference “POLAR 2026” in Saint Petersburg – for Serbia to get its own polar station in Antarctica by 2033, which would bear the name of Milutin Milanković.
The President of the Center, Slobodan Šljivančanin, said that Serbia has the potential to become part of major international polar programs and that the Center’s goal is to position domestic science more strongly in the world, Sputnik reports.
“Antarctica and the polar regions are precisely the places where, through the analysis of ice cores and climate data, the processes described by Milanković more than a century ago can best be studied. Therefore, his work represents one of the pillars of the future development of our polar science,” Šljivančanin pointed out.
According to him, the future Serbian polar station would deal with climatology, meteorology, monitoring of climate change, and the analysis of atmospheric and ice data, with participation in international scientific projects.
“The topics of the Arctic and Antarctica today play an increasingly important role in geopolitics as well, because the growing attention of the world is directed towards the polar regions. Questions of climate, natural resources, scientific research, and new transport routes make these areas one of the most significant for the future,” Šljivančanin pointed out.
He emphasized that one of the priorities of the Center is strengthening international cooperation and connecting with the world’s leading scientific institutions.

“We are a young center, but very motivated. As a man from sports, I am used to setting high goals and difficult tasks for myself. Precisely those ambitions push us forward and give us the strength to build something important for the future of Serbian science step by step,” concluded Šljivančanin.
The fourth international scientific and business conference “POLAR 2026” in Saint Petersburg was organized by the Russian Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute, one of the world’s leading institutions in the field of polar research.
The conference brought together scientists and researchers from several countries, and the main topics were climate change, modern research of the Arctic and Antarctica, as well as international cooperation in the field of polar science.
During their stay in Russia, the delegation of the Center held several meetings with representatives of international scientific institutions, with the goal of establishing cooperation and involving Serbia in global polar research programs.
The Serbian delegation expressed special gratitude to Director Aleksandr Makarov and Deputy Director Maksim E. Tatarkin for their hospitality and support for future cooperation with Serbian researchers.
