During the pouring of concrete yesterday, the wall of an adjacent building collapsed in Stevan Sremac Street in Novi Sad.
At the time of the collapse, a mother, father, baby, and nanny were in the apartment.
The incident happened around 15:30, 021.rs reported.
Everyone who was in the apartment evacuated the very moment the wall collapsed.
Fortunately, no one was injured on that occasion.
Firefighters, the inspection, and the police came out to the field.
In a split second, more than three cubic meters of concrete poured into the home of the Djordjevic family. The wall of their bedroom and children’s room shattered into pieces. Just a minute before that, Milos Djordjevic stood up from the bed which is next to the destroyed wall and thus remained alive and uninjured. His wife and baby were in the hallway at that moment.
„My wife, daughter and I were in the apartment, and the woman who takes care of the child with us, since we both work from home. Fortunately, no one was in the bedroom because that is a bedroom and a children’s room. A wall that leans against our building was being poured and obviously some omissions occurred. Fortunately, no one died, but it very well could have happened. I was working in that bedroom, I went to the restroom for a minute. Fortunately, that is that fateful minute, because at that moment the wall collapsed“, he said, as published by Danas.
As he says, he is most haunted by the thought, „what if this had happened at a time when everyone went to sleep“.
„The inspector said that the electrical installations that were on the demolished wall fell into the concrete, they could have caused a fatal outcome for all of us in the apartment. It was ordered that we leave the apartment and we must not stay there now. Previously, moisture from that construction site had already penetrated the apartment on the first floor, so we had a tenants’ meeting“, he stated, noting that, in such a small, blind alley, there are currently three large construction sites.
The director of Wolf Invest, Zeljko Pudar, emphasizes that he is very upset by everything that happened, but that the most important thing is that no one was injured.
He explains that his company does not have workers, but only a supervisory body and its construction site manager, and that they hire contractors. In this specific job when the concrete was poured, the contractors hired their subcontractors.
„The contractor only partially respected the supervision of my company, which insisted that the concrete sheets, that is, the vertical walls, be done in several stages, and not to be poured all at once, so that the concrete would harden and not create pressure. If this building were of a newer date and built properly, it wouldn’t be a problem to pour it all at once, but it is not. They did the pouring in two stages. They did not wait completely for the concrete to harden, but in about an hour they started the second round of pouring and at that moment the wall of the adjacent building gave way. Thank God that nothing happened to anyone. I am very sorry that this happened“, he said.
