A severe traffic accident occurred today in Dorćol, at the corner of Cara Dušana and Knićaninova streets, when a tram, according to initial information, derailed and crashed into a building next to the road. More than 10 people were injured in the accident.

According to eyewitnesses, it is suspected that the cause of the accident was a switch left open, which caused the tram to continue toward a side track instead of going straight and subsequently derail.

“A loud crash was heard. When we went outside to see what was happening, we saw the tram crashed into the building. It was supposed to continue straight, down Cara Dušana Street. We heard crying, a woman’s voice, people were in shock. The police and the Emergency Medical Service arrived very quickly, secured the area, and started taking away the injured,” an eyewitness told Nova.rs.

“He probably did not expect that it would turn. Panic ensued after the impact. Passengers were kicking the doors and windows to get outside, some were jumping out of the tram. The doors could not be opened,” said a interlocutor from the scene.

Photos and videos from the scene of the accident show the completely crushed front part of the tram, while pieces of glass and the structure are scattered across the street.

Traffic in this part of the city has been suspended, and the investigation is ongoing.

For now, it is not known exactly how many people were injured or the extent of their injuries. According to information so far, at least 10 people were injured.
