The State Department has advised U.S. citizens in Venezuela to immediately leave the country due to security risks.
The State Department announced on social media that international flights from Venezuela have resumed, and that there is information about groups of armed militias setting up roadblocks and searching vehicles for evidence of U.S. citizenship or support for the United States.
“The security situation in Venezuela remains fluid,” the statement said, as reported by CBS.
Maduro Sends Message From Prison Cell: We Are Fighters, We Are Fine
Nicolás Maduro Guerra, the son of the arrested Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro, said that his father sent a message from a prison cell in the United States stating that he and his wife Cilia Flores, who is being held in the same detention unit in New York, are “fine” and that they are “fighters.”
“We are fine. We are fighters. Do not be sad,” Nicolás Maduro Guerra conveyed his father’s words in a video released by the ruling United Socialist Party of Venezuela, stating that the message was passed on to him by Maduro’s lawyers, reports “Figaro.”
Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump thanked Venezuela for beginning the release of its political prisoners and added that those prisoners were lucky that the United States showed up.
“Venezuela has, in a grand way, begun the process of releasing its political prisoners. Thank you. I hope those prisoners remember how lucky they were that the United States showed up and did what had to be done. I hope they never forget that. If they do, it will not be good for them,” Trump said in a post on the Truth Social network.
Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores were arrested in early January in an international operation led by the United States and transferred to detention in New York.
