The signing of a long-term agreement between Srbijagas and Gazprom has been postponed for four months and conditioned on the halt of Serbian arms deliveries to Ukraine, Demostat reported, citing sources in diplomatic circles.
Their sources say that precisely at the time of discussions about a new gas arrangement, which had previously been approved by Presidents Vladimir Putin and Aleksandar Vučić, a statement was issued by the Press Bureau of the Foreign Intelligence Service of the Russian Federation (SVR).
“That was no accident,” Demostat writes.
The SVR statement claims that “Serbian defense companies, despite the declared neutrality of official Belgrade, continue to supply ammunition to Kyiv.”
General Director of Srbijagas Dušan Bajatović, who went to Russia at the end of May to finalize the new agreement, was satisfied upon his return even with the annex to the previous one, although it meant uncertainty until early autumn.
“We fared well,” Bajatović said, adding that Serbia, as in the previous three years, will be able to count on 6.1 million cubic meters of gas per day until the end of September at a price of 290 euros per 1,000 cubic meters.
At that moment, on the Dutch TTF exchange, 1,000 cubic meters of gas were worth 369.1 euros, on the London exchange 338.7, and on the New York exchange 111.3 euros. Enough to assess that Serbia will have cheap energy until the new agreement.
Only about ten days later, Bajatović mentioned that our goal is not only to increase guaranteed quantities, but also to agree on terms and price for ten years instead of three as before, and that this led to the postponement.
At the same time, he also stated “that everyone is now pushing for Turkish Stream” (a gas pipeline that runs under the Black Sea, from Turkey via Bulgaria towards Hungary, Slovakia, Austria…). This, by the way, is the only remaining gas connection between Russia and Europe, as the Nord Stream and Yamal pipelines have been stopped and the network through Ukraine is highly risky.
