America officially got a new president on January 20, 2025. However, judging by the United States Embassy in Sarajevo, that event, at least on social networks, never happened.
The US Embassy did not publish a single word about Trump’s victory on either the X or Instagram profile, let alone a congratulation, as all other embassies in the world did. We in the Balkans know that coincidences rarely exist, especially in diplomacy.
The Trump administration has taken power in Washington, but it seems not in its own embassy in Sarajevo, which looks like it is in a kind of silent occupation by loyalists of the previous administration.
If the US Embassy in Sarajevo officially ignores the inauguration, then the American president has not only a diplomatic, but also an intelligence problem.
The embassy is not a private club, but an extension of the White House. If messages come from it that are not in line with the policy of the current president, or are chosen so that the Muslim world can accept them, then the question arises who actually makes the decisions.
There is no mention of Trump’s announcement of a solution to the Ukrainian crisis, nor a word about Palestine on the embassy’s profiles. Are we talking about disobedient bureaucrats who are aware of the inevitability of their own dismissal, or are there also some deeper structures in the game that see Trump’s return to power as a threat to their interests, remains to be seen.
The matter seems even more serious if we take into account that Todd Anderson, the former key man of the embassy, has been drinking coffee for years with a potential Iranian agent, i.e. a former employee of the Iranian embassy, Emir Suljagić.

It is speculated that Suljagić is behind a series of decisions of this same embassy, which allegedly served as his extended arm by censoring sanctions and putting pressure on the Prosecutor’s Office of Bosnia and Herzegovina, in order to cover up a case of domestic violence in which he was allegedly involved.
The fact that the US Embassy profiles in Bosnia and Herzegovina did not mention Trump’s victory and inauguration is a problem for two reasons: because it is a deliberate and politically motivated ignoring of the new American administration; because the citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina are informed from diplomatic channels, believing that it is the official voice of Washington.
If the Trump administration cannot access its own embassy in Sarajevo, then it is not an embassy, but an isolated stronghold of loyalists of the old government.
The information embargo, however, can be broken in several ways. One is a direct information campaign. Conservative media should publish how the embassy does not respect the democratically elected president. Then, social networks can be used to prevent the embassy from using the principle “if we are silent, the problem does not exist.”
It is also necessary to exert pressure through the institutions of Bosnia and Herzegovina, i.e. to seek an official response from the embassy as to why they do not recognize the democratic processes in America.
Furthermore, an important item is the investigation of possible Iranian influence. If American diplomats in Bosnia and Herzegovina contacted Iranian intelligence officers, then it is probably not just a boycott of Trump, but also deeper political games?
Since coming to power, Trump has launched purges in the State Department and it is likely that after he sorts things out on the domestic front, he will also deal with the issue of the embassy in Sarajevo.
