Serbian budget car brand Yugo is coming back. Soon...
Just three months after the revival of the brand was announced, the new model of the promised Yugo was presented last week. And that in 1:5 scale, at the Car Design Event in Munich, Germany.
Yugo has promised that the hatchback will remain true to the brand’s traditional philosophy. An affordable car with only two doors in the B-segment (or small car segment).
The new Yugo boasts a clean, simple design. And it could come from any European hatchback specialist. However, there is still no concrete name, and there are plans for three different models.
A sports version of the Yugo will be presented at the Car Design Event Classic in September. While fans of this cult brand will have to wait for EXPO 2027 in Belgrade to see a fully functional prototype.

Electric versions possible, but not likely
Yugo, under the leadership of Professor Dr. Aleksandar Bjelić, promises a fun and affordable car that will meet global safety standards and come with manual and automatic transmissions with internal combustion engines. Electric versions are “possible” (but not likely), and different body variants are also planned.
Seventeen years after production of the Zastava Automobiles Yugo GV (as it was called in the USA), which developed a cult status over 28 years, was discontinued, the presentation of a new model is coming. And that, despite a poor reputation when it comes to build quality and reliability.
Malcolm Bricklin introduced the Yugo to the American market in 1985. It achieved surprising success, with 48,812 units sold in 1987 alone, although it was the slowest car sold in the USA at the time.
By 1992, that figure had fallen to just 1,412. The Yugo was withdrawn from American showrooms, leaving behind 141,651 cars sold. The original Yugo was a truly Yugoslav car, with parts manufactured in Macedonia, Croatia, Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as in Serbia.
However, with the decline of Yugo, Dacia from neighboring Romania came onto the scene, and the Renault Group’s budget brand became one of the rising stars in the European car market.
