A Croatian film critic, Damjan Raknić, described the series “Sablja” as “difficult to follow at times due to the multitude of characters appearing,” and subsequently, a Croatian N1 journalist and editor wrote on Facebook that it’s a good thing HBO provides subtitles and notes in brackets which character says which line. Namely, the changes in the Croatian subtitles are often nonsensical, but they do exist.

“These subtitles on HBO for the series Sablja in Croatian are handy because they have the character’s name in brackets, making it easier to connect the plot to real events,” Ilija Jandrić, a journalist and editor at N1 television, commented in a post on his Facebook profile, adding: “But it can also be funny when slang is translated into standard language.

(Next part can not be translated, because it would lose its original purpose, so try to understand the context)

Original: Kevo, čekaj me na gajbi!
Title: Mama, čekaj me u stanu!
Original: Otkriće nam sve štekove.
Title: Otkrit će nam sva skrovišta.
Original: A u pi..u materinu, bre!
Title: U p..u materinu!“

(Serbian and Croatian languages are the same language, and having subtitles is bizzare)

In his review of the first two episodes of the series inspired by the assassination of Serbian Prime Minister Zoran Đinđić, film critic for Jutarnji list, Damjan Raknić, commented on this issue and wrote:

FOLLOW US ON FACEBOOK:

“Although Tagić and Stanković provided information before the first episode that to a certain extent approximates the socio-political situation in which Serbia found itself at the turn of the 21st century, ‘Sablja’ is difficult to follow at times, primarily due to the large number of characters appearing, but also due to (…) flashbacks. The sequences revolving around Danica and Boris are more accessible in that sense because there are not so many people and names in them, however, those where the focus is on Uroš can be confusing. Given that ‘Sablja’ is evidently primarily made for a Serbian audience, which better than an uninformed observer knows the people on whom the characters in the series are based, it is understandable that the authors did not spend too much time introducing everyone.”

The new Serbian drama series, written and directed by Vladimir Tagić and Goran Stanković, is airing on the Max platform.

As Raknić writes, the story is told from the perspective of four characters: “journalist Danica (Milica Gojković), who follows political events in Serbia; detective Boris (Ljubomir Bandović), who is trying to discover how Đinđić was killed; petty criminal Uroš (Lazar Tasić), who helped the assassins; and Đinđić (Dragan Mićanović), the Serbian Prime Minister who was killed for his efforts to crack down on organized crime in Serbia.”
