Duško Vujošević, the celebrated coach who himself had served as the national team’s head coach years earlier, revealed new details he learned about the events in Riga during EuroBasket.
He emphasized that the political and social situation in Serbia greatly influenced the performance of the Serbian basketball team at EuroBasket, where they were eliminated in the round of 16.
Vujošević said he was surprised because Serbia, after four victories, suffered two defeats and returned home quickly.
“I was surprised by Serbia’s elimination, like everyone else. From third-hand sources, I then learned certain things. People came on charter flights and threatened how the cheering should go, that nothing should be chanted against Vučić,” Vujošević said.
He continued:
“At the same time, a film ‘The Road to Gold’ was being shot. The Americans were supposed to make a documentary about how the gold was won, and probably for that reason it was necessary that there be no chants against Vučić.”
He has now revealed that head coach Svetislav Pešić spoke with Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić.
“As far as I know, Pešić spoke with Vučić, and within the team there was a dilemma whether to withdraw from the competition and return home,” Vujošević said.
He stressed that he personally paid the price for speaking out.
“I feel sorry for those guys, but they also need to take a stand and say something, instead of me, who wasn’t even there. I’ve spoken enough and paid the price. Even now, I’m talking more than is smart or wise.”
