Around 40,000 federal employees in the United States have accepted an offer to leave their jobs in exchange for temporary financial compensation, Newsweek reports.

At the end of last month, the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump offered financial incentives to two million full-time federal civilian workers to resign as part of plans for a drastic reduction in the size of the government.

By the end of today, employees must decide whether to accept the offer to resign while receiving temporary financial compensation until the end of September.

The offer applies to the majority of the three million government employees in the U.S., excluding military personnel, and the directive requires federal employees to either accept the resignation package, which includes salary payments until September, or remain in their jobs and risk potential layoffs as part of President Donald Trump’s government restructuring efforts.

In response to the offer, the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) and other unions have filed a lawsuit, challenging the legality of the directive, citing violations of the Administrative Procedure Act.

The legal complaint argues that the directive is “arbitrary and capricious” and violates due process by forcing workers to make a major career decision within a short timeframe.
