The U.S. administration has sent severance offers to employees of at least four American intelligence agencies, including the CIA, as part of President Donald Trump’s efforts to reduce the federal workforce, spokespeople for these agencies have confirmed.

According to agency representatives, the offers were extended to personnel from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, the National Security Agency (NSA), the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, and the National Reconnaissance Office, Reuters reported.

The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) announced on Tuesday that its staff had also received severance package offers.

A CIA spokesperson stated that these measures are part of the strategy of the new CIA Director John Ratcliffe, Reuters reported.

Trump’s plans to reduce the federal workforce in the United States have caused panic among employees and some minor public protests. The amount of the severance packages being offered, as well as specific details regarding layoffs, remain unknown, according to the British news agency.

The severance offers are part of a broader reform of the U.S. government being carried out by the Trump administration, which has already fired hundreds of federal employees in an effort to reduce bureaucracy and place loyalists in key positions.

The White House last week offered the possibility of paid leave until September 30 for two million permanent federal employees.

Meanwhile, unions representing federal employees have filed a lawsuit in an attempt to block the plan, Tanjug reports.
