POP GETS MARRIED: Legendary NBA coach of Serbian descent ties the knot with his colleague’s wife!

Gregg Popovich, the legendary former basketball coach, has married Mary Barth Budenholzer, the former wife of his longtime assistant, Mike Budenholzer.

Numerous American media outlets reported that Gregg Popovich got married at the age of 78, citing TMZ, which was the first to report the news.

Popovich and his new wife (61) got married on September 16 in Texas, according to a marriage license from Bexar County obtained by the media outlet.

Popovich, also known as the “Crazy Serbian,” won four NBA championships with the San Antonio Spurs (1999, 2003, 2005, 2007 and 2014) with Budenholzer serving as his assistant coach. Budenholzer left the Spurs in 2013 — one year before the franchise won its most recent NBA title — to take a job with the Atlanta Hawks. After coaching the Hawks, Bucks and Suns, Budenholzer did not coach in the NBA during the 2025/26 season.

Budenholzer and his former wife divorced in 2016.

Popovich ended his legendary NBA coaching career in 2025 after 29 seasons and finished as the NBA’s all-time leader in wins. The NBA adjusted Popovich’s career record months after his retirement, removing the 77 games he missed during the 2024/25 season, bringing his final career coaching record to 1,390-824.
