American President Donald Trump announced that, after talks with the leaders of Thailand and Cambodia, an agreement has been reached for the two sides to meet immediately to achieve a ceasefire and peace, following deadly border clashes that claimed dozens of lives.
Just an hour after announcing that he had spoken with Thailand’s acting prime minister, Trump confirmed on social media that he had also spoken with Cambodia’s prime minister, stating that a concrete agreement had been reached.
“Just had a very good conversation with the Prime Minister of Cambodia and informed him of my discussions with Thailand and its acting Prime Minister. Both sides are seeking an immediate ceasefire and peace… They agreed to meet immediately and quickly agree to a ceasefire and, ultimately, PEACE!” Trump wrote.
Trump also emphasized that both countries want to return to the “negotiating table” with the United States regarding trade agreements, but he set a clear condition.
“We deem it inappropriate (for that to happen) until the fighting STOPS,” he stated, and added: “Once all is done, and peace is within reach, I look forward to concluding our trade agreements with both!”
At least 32 people, including soldiers and civilians, were killed in the border clashes that began on Thursday, while nearly 200,000 people were displaced. Both countries accuse each other of starting the conflict.
Before Trump’s mediation, Cambodia called for an “unconditional” truce, while Thailand’s foreign minister stated that Cambodia must show “true readiness to end the conflict” before negotiations can resume.
During an emergency meeting on Friday, UN Security Council members also called for de-escalation and appealed to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to mediate in finding a peaceful solution.
Trump concluded his mediation with an optimistic message: “It was an honor to work with both countries. They have a long and rich history and culture. I hope they will get along for many years to come.”
