The Minister of Internal Affairs, Ivica Dačić, stated today that the police have made a great contribution to preserving civil peace and stability in Serbia, that police officers have nowhere intervened without reason, emphasizing that the police are an organized institution that has the right to use means of coercion.

“However, when it applies means of coercion, it writes reports about it,” Dačić told RTS and added that the Internal Control Sector acts on reports, i.e., where it is shown that complaints are founded, measures are applied, and where there is no basis, those complaints are dismissed.

“Every police officer, when leaving home, presumably wishes not to intervene during the day. So now what, are police officers people who can’t wait to come to work to beat someone?” Dačić asked.

He stated that his father was a police officer and that they feared every day whether he would return home alive from work. He said that police officers experience insults they did not deserve. He emphasized that videos are available from European countries showing how someone fares when, for example, they want to stop on a highway or when undeclared demonstrations are organized.

“Or, God forbid, someone tries to block the BBC from doing its regular program. That’s six years in prison. In Italy, a law has been passed that when you block vital roads, it’s at least six years in prison,” Dačić stated.

He pointed out that laws in Serbia should be changed, stating that the law stipulates that public gatherings on public roads are not prohibited.

“The one who wrote the law probably never in his life thought that someone would want to organize a gathering at every traffic light or every intersection. We have warned several times that the police will, of course, be extremely cautious, that they will behave defensively in terms of defending facilities, defending the state, defending themselves,” Dačić stated.

He added that an attack on the police, state institutions, an attack on the safety of other people or the property of other people or organizations, as well as the occupation of critical infrastructure, cannot be allowed. He emphasized that they have warned several times that the blockade of infrastructure, which is vital for people’s functioning, cannot be allowed anywhere in the world, so it cannot be allowed here either, explaining that he is referring to highways, railways, air traffic, bridges, thermal power plants, water supply, and urban traffic.

“I call on everyone to respect the law. On the other hand, I am sure that the police have made a great contribution to preserving civil peace and stability in Serbia,” Dačić concluded.
