The Serbian Orthodox Church and believers today celebrate the feast dedicated to Saint Simeon the Stylite, one of the most famous ascetics in the history of Christianity, as well as the Ecclesiastical New Year – the beginning of the new liturgical year.

Saint Simeon the Stylite was born at the end of the 4th century in Asia Minor. Even as a young man, he dedicated himself to a strict ascetic life, and he spent the greater part of his life standing on a pillar (stolp), praying to God constantly. His unusual and extremely difficult ascetic practice attracted a multitude of people who came to see him, listen to his teachings, and seek advice. He died in 459, leaving an example of unshakeable faith and complete devotion to Christ.

In addition to this feast, today’s date in the Orthodox calendar also has a special meaning because it marks the Ecclesiastical New Year. Unlike the civil calendar, the liturgical year in the Church begins on September 1 according to the old calendar, and on September 14 according to the new one. This date is connected to the time when, according to tradition, the Lord Jesus Christ began his preaching and public ministry.

Today’s feast reminds believers of a new beginning in spiritual life, to enter the new year of the Church with prayer, fasting, and good deeds, praying for health, peace, and blessings in their home and family.
