“We can’t tell them anything, they are in charge here in the building of the SO (Municipal Assembly) of the city of Zaječar,” the police in Zaječar told members of the National Assembly, Miroslav Aleksić, Miloš Parandilović, and Aleksandar Jovanović Ćuta, after they called the police to enable them to enter the session of the local parliament. This practically means that the private security hired by the SNS government in the City Assembly has greater authority than the police.
The session of the Zaječar City Assembly held on Wednesday ended with a series of incidents, including the use of a smoke bomb and pepper spray, while the private security in the assembly hall assaulted councilors, and at the entrance prevented the entry of National Assembly members, Miroslav Aleksić, President of the People’s Movement of Serbia, and Miloš Parandilović, President of the New Face of Serbia party.
After the session ended, Aleksić described the situation as a complete breakdown of the rule of law.
“So, we, as members of the National Assembly, called the police to enable us to enter the hall as citizens and as members of the National Assembly. We experienced a police officer saying, ‘we can’t tell them anything, they are in charge here in the building of the SO of the city of Zaječar.’ The court said that the Assembly is illegal, it annulled the verification of mandates. They say, ‘we don’t care, we can do it, we have the majority, we continue.’ Therefore, this is a complete breakdown of the rule of law and the last moment for something to change in the state, because these people are no longer capable of governing the state,” Aleksić said.

Parandilović spoke about the role of private security.
“They don’t know who sent them, but they are standing there protecting the regime of Aleksandar Vučić, embodied by these martyrs and slaves who govern Zaječar,” Parandilović added.
The incidents at the Zaječar session once again showed serious problems in the functioning of local authorities and an alarming situation in terms of disrespect for the law and court decisions.
As a reminder, the Higher Court in Zaječar accepted the opposition’s appeal and confirmed that the Assembly was not constituted within the legal deadlines. Therefore, an interim administration should have been introduced, and then new elections called. However, government representatives ignored that decision, claiming they have the majority and will continue working.
At yesterday’s session of the Zaječar Municipal Assembly, the situation escalated into a series of incidents. Private security physically attacked councilors, one had his shirt torn, and a smoke bomb and pepper spray were used.
