US President Donald Trump’s plan to deploy troops in Chicago constitutes an abuse of power, said today the Democratic governor of the US state of Illinois, J. B. Pritzker.
“There is no emergency that justifies sending the National Guard to Illinois, and the US president is trying to invent a crisis,” said Governor Pritzker in a statement, as reported by the BBC.
The Pentagon is working on plans to deploy the US military in Chicago as part of US President Donald Trump’s fight against crime, homelessness, and illegal immigration, US media reported.
Citing its sources, the Washington Post states that the US Department of Defense’s planning, which has been ongoing for weeks, has several options, including the mobilization of at least a few thousand National Guard members as early as September, Reuters reports.
“Chicago is in chaos. We will probably fix that next,” Trump said on Friday during a conversation with journalists, criticizing Chicago’s mayor and the leaders of cities run by Democrats.
