Citizens and students will gather again tonight in several cities across Serbia for protests. For now, the time and location of the gatherings are known for Novi Sad, Niš, Kruševac, Leskovac, and Inđija.
“Novi Sad Assemblies” called for a protest titled “The Garbage is Falling – The People Rule” tonight at 8 p.m. in front of the Rectorate building.
“The garbage that was left yesterday, we’re taking it out completely tonight. They think they can scare us, but every detention gives birth to new freedom, and every police beatdown creates even stronger resolve! We are the people and we are everywhere. They are few and they hide in the darkness. Novi Sad is breathing again tonight. The fight continues, freedom is not delayed. Tonight we are cleaning again. The whole nation against the rats,” the Novi Sad Assemblies wrote on their Instagram page.
In Niš, students have called for a gathering at 9 p.m. at Crveni petao with the message, “Due to the criminal activities of the SNS, a forced shutdown will follow.”
At 8 p.m., a protest will also be held in Leskovac, called for by students, pupils, and assemblies.
In Kruševac, residents will gather at 8 p.m. at the Square of Actors.
And in Inđija, there will be a protest at 8 p.m. at Freedom Square.
“The brutality of members of the Serbian Ministry of Internal Affairs is growing, but it’s not consistent. While they are equipping criminals and helping them clash with unarmed citizens, they are simultaneously brutally beating people until they lose consciousness—and they don’t stop there! Tonight we are once again showing them that they cannot scare us! Let’s send them a clear message – WE WILL NOT STOP!” the Inđija assembly posted on social media.
As a reminder, students and citizens have been protesting for four days across Serbia, prompted by the August 12 attack by supporters of the Serbian Progressive Party on demonstrators in Vrbas and Bela Palanka. Those attacks motivated a large number of citizens to take to the streets, as did the excessive use of force by the police, which was most notable in Valjevo.
Additionally, during protests in Valjevo last night, the SNS offices were set on fire, while the premises of the Court, the Prosecutor’s Office, and the City Administration were also vandalized. In Novi Sad and Belgrade, demonstrators threw paint and rocks at the offices of other parties like the Socialist Movement and the Serbian Radical Party, and the radicals’ flag was also set on fire.
