The first woman to serve as mayor of Belgrade, Slobodanka Gruden, has passed away at the age of 86, reports RTS.
According to RTS, Slobodanka Gruden graduated from the Faculty of Medicine and spent 33 years working in the Blood Transfusion Service. She published 120 professional papers in domestic and international journals.
She led the city of Belgrade from June 1992 to July 1994, during the most difficult period for the capital of Serbia and the then Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, at the time of sanctions and war.
She also served as president of the Red Cross of Serbia and, during her professional career, held positions such as vice president of the Transfusiology Section of the Serbian Medical Society, president of the Expert Commission for Transfusiology at the Ministry of Health of Serbia, and head of the Blood Transfusion Service at the Zemun Clinical Hospital Center.
She was decorated with the Order of Labor and received the Golden Badge of the Socialist Alliance of Working People of Serbia, as well as the Golden Emblem of the Yugoslav Red Cross.
