Serbia’s women’s volleyball team opened the European Championship with a convincing victory! Zoran Terzić’s team defeated Austria 3:0 (25:17, 25:9, 25:21) in the first round of Group B.

This was not a real challenge for the “Blues” – more of a warm-up for what awaits them later in the competition.

Tijana Bošković and Maja Ognjenović played as much as necessary, spending a set and a half on the court. Anja Zubić, Vanja Ivanović, Branka Tica, Nina Čajić, Minja Osmajić and Bojana Gočanin made their debuts at European Championships.

Tijana Bošković was the most efficient player with 11 points, Aleksandra Uzelac and Hena Kurtagić scored nine each, Branka Tica had eight, while Mina Popović and Anja Zubić scored five apiece.

Serbia established its dominance right from the start. A varied attack and solid blocking gave our team a big lead. The Austrians were impressed by the players they saw on the other side – and had no answer to the “Blues’” game. They had problems with reception, which also affected their attack.

Head coach Zoran Terzić was angry about two aces that landed on our side of the court, but he had no other reasons for concern. Led by Tijana Bošković, Serbia comfortably took the first set.

The reigning European runners-up were even more convincing in the second set, now with Branka Tica in the lineup. Their serve worked well, the middle blockers got into their rhythm – Hena Kurtagić was particularly impressive – and the difference quickly reached double digits.

Our coaching staff decided to take Tijana Bošković out of the game midway through the set, followed by Maja Ognjenović, so Anja Zubić and Slađa Mirković were on the court. Nothing changed on the court, and Austria could not even reach ten points during this period.

Serbia then entered the third set with a completely different lineup – Vanja Ivanović and Minja Osmajić were also on the court. Kurtagić was the only player from the starting six who remained.

There was a much bigger battle, as the Austrians found their rhythm, raised their block and managed on several occasions to come within one point. However, the Serbian women did not allow any drama and routinely finished the job.

In their second match in Brno, the “Blues” will face hosts Czech Republic on Sunday at 7 p.m.
