Jannik Sinner will not participate in the US Open, it was officially confirmed on Friday. The Italian tennis player announced that he will not travel to New York due to a knee injury.
The world No. 1 has not played since Wimbledon, and in recent days there had been speculation over whether he would be ready for the final Grand Slam of the season.
Italian media reported that he had still not fully recovered from an injury to his right knee and that he would travel to New York only if he were 100 percent fit.
Apparently, his latest examinations showed that this was not the case.
“Although I have worked hard with my team and medical staff, we have now had to make the difficult decision that I will not be able to compete at the US Open this year. Over the past few days, we returned to the court in Monte Carlo and realized that I still need more time to recover from the problem with my right knee. Obviously, I am very sad and disappointed, because New York holds a special place in my heart. I was really looking forward to returning and playing in the electric atmosphere in front of the wonderful crowd there,” Sinner said.
We remind you that Sinner reached the final of the US Open last year.
The previous day, Carlos Alcaraz confirmed that he will compete in New York – even though he has not played since April this year due to a wrist injury.
Novak Djokovic will also compete – and it is expected that following this news, he will have a better chance of winning the title.
The US Open officially begins on August 30.
