Jovana Parmaković, along with her husband and two children, moved back to her family’s estate in Noćaj two years ago from an apartment in Sremska Mitrovica. The young couple is now producing milk and gradually taking over the farm from Jovana’s father.
Although she grew up in the countryside, Jovana knew almost nothing about agriculture or livestock farming until two years ago. She quickly adapted to early mornings and learned the daily tasks on the family farm.
“Two years ago, I barely even knew what a cow looked like—even though they were right there! My father brought in cows in 2014, but I had no interaction with them. Now, I do everything—I even cook, which I didn’t do before. I make cheese and sell it,” says Jovana Parmaković from Noćaj.
Everything on the farm is a team effort. They currently milk over 30 cows and deliver around 450 liters of milk daily to a dairy.
“It’s an incredibly difficult job because it requires a lot of sacrifice. Raising one baby is easier than dairy farming. Dairy cows need care from the early morning until late at night,” says Jelica Parmaković from Noćaj.
“In the summer, we try to get up really early to finish before the heat sets in. In the winter, it’s a bit more relaxed—we wake up around seven or eight, have coffee, and then start working. The responsibilities are non-stop, 24 hours a day. Sometimes a cow gives birth in the middle of the night, and of course, you have to get up and help,” explains Jovana Parmaković.
Their barns and pens are full, with around 100 head of cattle in their Mačvan farmyard. They also cultivate 80 hectares of land, mostly planting grains.
“They help me a lot. I couldn’t do anything without them. This kind of work is all connected—one task depends on another. The conditions are tough. When it’s time to harvest clover or grain, it has to be done immediately. The cattle can’t wait. When I was alone, I had to take care of the animals first, then go to the fields,” says Dejan Parmaković.
Dairy farming is considered the hardest branch of livestock production, according to these young farmers, who don’t regret moving back to the countryside. To improve milk quality, make milking easier, and enhance cow nutrition, they are planning to build a modern facility.
