For the first time since the beginning of the student protests, police officers admitted before the prosecutor that the official note on the basis of which the proceedings were initiated is not accurate and that, as they claim, they compiled it under pressure from their superior. Because of this, the investigation against the professor from Čačak, who was charged with attacking police officers during the protest in Novi Sad on September 5, has been suspended.

It rarely happens that police officers deny their own reports before a prosecutor, and precisely because of that, the investigation against the professor from Čačak, who was charged with insulting the police and throwing stones at them during the protest in Novi Sad, has been suspended.

“When they came before the prosecutor, they stated that they had not seen me, nor my colleague, nor the others committing those acts, and what is very important is that they were forced by their superior to write those reports,” says professor Aleksandar Dilparić.

The professor ended up under investigation based on the official notes of three police officers from Subotica. In them, it was stated that they saw him attacking members of the MUP during the protest in front of the Faculty of Philosophy.

“The video clearly shows and hears that the professor did not commit any criminal offense”

The defense, however, also obtained a video recording of the event published in a live stream on YouTube.

“Where it is clearly seen and heard on that recording that the professor did not commit any criminal offense, that he did not curse anyone, that he behaved politely, and that at the moment the incident occurred in front of the Faculty of Philosophy, together with the other participants, he was slowly moving away from the scene,” says lawyer Željko Kočić.

The professor recalls that back then his colleague was separated from the crowd without explanation. Both of them were then, he claims, hit with shields and detained. However, he says that the hits did not fall hardest on him, but rather the fact that he could not inform his family of his whereabouts for hours.

Presented in tabloids as a thug who came to Novi Sad to cause riots

Because of this, the writing of the tabloids falls hardest on him in everything, in which he was presented as a thug who came to Novi Sad to cause riots. The lawyer believes that this is a pattern that has been repeated at protests in recent months.

“Immediately after the end of those incidents, instead of arresting those persons who committed the incidents, the police arrest other citizens… This procedure showed us that we can’t really trust them, that the police have become deeply politicized and that they are turning into a political organization, and not an body that serves to protect citizens,” says the lawyer.

The lawyers announce that, if the prosecution does not react ex officio, they will file criminal and disciplinary complaints against those responsible.
