Legendary actress and singer Olivera Katarina was buried today in the Alley of Distinguished Citizens at the New Cemetery in Belgrade, where she was seen off to her eternal rest in the presence of family, friends, and a small number of colleagues from the public scene.
Although over a career spanning more than six decades she left an indelible mark on domestic and world art, many were surprised that there were very few famous personalities at her final send-off.
It was hardest for her son Mane Šakić, a world-renowned painter, who could not hide his emotions while carrying flowers and a photograph of his mother. It was he who fulfilled her last wish for the send-off to be dignified, without speeches and great fanfare, just as the artist had once requested.
Who among the famous was at the funeral of Olivera Katarina?
Among the first to appear was actress Sonja Kolačarić, and then actress Snežana Savić, who arrived at the cemetery with white roses. Then came Minister Nikola Selaković, famous basketball player Moka Slavnić, actress Maja Mandžuka, Ivana Žigon, and Rastko Janković.
Besides a couple more names from the art world, such as composer Aleksandar Milanović Kobac, no other celebrities appeared.

She was buried in the Alley of Distinguished Citizens, next to the recently deceased folk music singer and composer Andrija Bajić, author of numerous big hits of the domestic music scene. In the immediate vicinity of her grave site is also the grave of the celebrated basketball player Radivoj Korać, one of the greatest names in Yugoslav and Serbian basketball.
