Starlink, the satellite internet network developed by SpaceX, owned by American billionaire Elon Musk, is now available in Kosovo (which has unilaterally declared independence). According to announcements, the entire territory of Serbia and Montenegro should receive this technology in 2025.
On December 21st, Elon Musk announced via the X social network: “Starlink’s high-speed, low-latency internet is now available in Kosovo!”
Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti highlighted the importance of this event, assessing that the arrival of Starlink is an important step in improving digital infrastructure. He added that Starlink has proven to be extremely useful for critical communications during natural disasters and emergencies.
How does Starlink work?
The Starlink network uses over 6,000 satellites in low Earth orbit, enabling stable internet even in the most remote areas. The satellites are located at an altitude of about 500 kilometers, making them approximately 65 times closer to Earth than traditional stationary satellites. This feature significantly reduces communication latency, making it up to 10 times smaller.
In October, the Regulatory Authority for Electronic and Postal Communications (ARKEP) in Kosovo granted Starlink a license to provide internet services throughout Kosovo.
Rezarta Duraku Rizaj, a member of ARKEP, stated that the operating license for Starlink is significant for national security, as the network’s infrastructure is located in space and is resistant to damage during war or natural disasters.
“This technology is key for government institutions and companies that manage critical infrastructure, but it will also be useful for individuals in rural areas without quality internet access,” added Rizaj.

Prices and Usage
Starlink services can be ordered through the official website. After ordering, users receive a receiver that connects to satellites in space. This device is portable and can be used in different locations, such as mountainous areas or inaccessible terrain.
The cost of the service varies depending on the purchasing power of the country. Users pay a one-time fee for the equipment and a monthly fee for the selected service package.
Expansion in the Region
Montenegro and Serbia should gain access to Starlink in 2025. On the coverage map, most European countries have available Starlink, while Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, and Montenegro are currently awaiting approval.
Starlink has already played a significant role in Ukraine, where it is used for military purposes, as well as for maintaining communications in crisis situations. In Turkey, the company is still awaiting approval from regulatory bodies.
It is expected that the arrival of Starlink in Serbia and Montenegro will enable faster and more stable internet in all parts of these countries, including rural and hard-to-reach areas.
